Google Ads for Tree Care & Tree Removal: Between Emergency, Permit and Season
Honest, practical knowledge about Google Ads in your industry – no advertising promises, just what typically works in practice.
Tree care is an industry with two completely different speeds – and that shapes exactly how I build campaigns. On one side there's the emergency: a storm has dropped a branch or a whole tree onto a roof, a car or a driveway, and someone has to come today. On the other side there's the planned business: a homeowner wants the big tree pruned back or removed in autumn – and calmly compares several companies. Throw both into one pot and you either waste the expensive urgency of the emergency or burn budget on searches that are still weeks of research.
What people search for almost always reveals the level of urgency – and the intent is very local. "Get tree removed [city]", "tree removal cost", "have a tree cut back" are purchase-ready, location-bound searches with clear intent: the person wants a company within reach that comes by and makes an offer. "Storm damage tree" or "tree fell on house", by contrast, are genuine emergencies – every minute counts, and the click is worth more. Pure info searches like "when are you allowed to cut down trees" or "tree felling permit" show someone who is still at the very beginning. I don't cut those out across the board, but I treat them differently from someone typing "tree removal emergency service [city]". A tight radius around the company is almost always wiser here than broad targeting – nobody enjoys driving the aerial lift two hours across the country.
The decisive conversion here is hardly ever an online purchase, but the call or the quote request – and ultimately the on-site appointment, where the tree is assessed and a fixed price is set. That has clear consequences for the setup: call tracking is mandatory, because in an emergency almost everything comes by phone; alongside that, the quote form has to be measured cleanly as a conversion. Anyone who only counts clicks never sees which search terms actually lead to an aerial-lift job – and optimizes into the void. In practice that also means: on the landing page, the phone number, the service area and a clear "free quote" path have to be visible immediately. Nobody fills out a long form in the middle of a storm.
The industry-typical stumbling block is the question of trust and permits – and here I have to be honest, because Google Ads doesn't solve everything. A felling is dangerous work close to the house, often with climbing techniques or a crane; customers fear damage and dubious providers. Ads and landing page win here through the tangible: proof of insurance, professional qualification, genuine reviews, proper disposal of the cuttings. On top of that comes a point many underestimate: in many municipalities, felling larger trees requires a permit (tree protection bylaw), and the rules differ from place to place. This isn't legal advice from me – but anyone who addresses the topic openly on the page and offers help with the application comes across as instantly more competent than someone who pretends the problem doesn't exist.
On seasonality there's a peculiarity that hardly any other garden industry shares – and it's legal, not just weather-driven: Germany's Federal Nature Conservation Act heavily restricts the radical felling and clearing of trees, hedges and shrubs during the vegetation period roughly from March 1 to September 30, to protect nesting birds. Gentle maintenance and shaping cuts as well as the removal of acute hazards remain possible, but the classic felling business therefore shifts strongly into the winter half-year – in autumn and winter demand rises noticeably, while in summer pruning, crown cuts and storm emergencies dominate. I plan this logic into budget and ad copy from the start, instead of spreading the money evenly across the year. On competition I deliberately stay qualitative: emergency and felling terms are more contested than pure care searches because of the high urgency and the decent order value, and storm situations drive both demand and click prices up at short notice. I won't promise you specific euro figures – they fluctuate too much by region, weather and timing. What I do promise is a clean separation of emergency and planning, honest measurement, and a budget that runs when felling and demand actually happen for you.

Common questions: Google Ads for Tree Care & Tree Removal
Yes, but the permit issue belongs straight into the account. Some searchers just want to get rid of a tree that the bylaw won't actually allow to be removed - that costs you clicks without a job. I catch this through the ad copy and landing page (assessment, application, proper pruning instead of full removal) and exclude pure 'am I even allowed to fell it' research as far as possible, so you tend to get the enquiries that can really be commissioned.
Yes, and that is the most important lever here. Storm damage is searched mobile and immediately and ends in a phone call - so I only run emergency terms when someone is actually there to pick up. The plannable pruning, crown care or garden removal I treat as its own campaign with its own messaging. Thrown into one pot, the expensive, irregular emergency search otherwise eats up the budget of the plannable business.
I actively manage the seasonal situation, but not bluntly by the calendar. Larger felling and cutback work on trees and shrubs is the normal case outside the growing season, gentle care and traffic-safety work run all year, and storm damage comes unplanned. I adjust budget and message to these phases instead of betting fully on 'tree removal' in high summer, where many jobs aren't permitted anyway.
Correct, the goal is almost never an instant deal but the call or enquiry for an on-site assessment - without having seen the tree, no one can seriously quote a price. I set the account up around that and make calls and forms measurable. Whether you mainly address homeowners or municipalities and property managers, I keep separate, because these B2C and B2B enquiries search differently and take different lengths of time.
