Google Ads for Hair Salons & Beauty: Chair Utilization, Color, and the Real Bottleneck

Honest, practical knowledge about Google Ads in your industry – no advertising promises, just what typically works in practice.

Honestly, first: a busy salon with regular clients rarely needs ads for an ordinary haircut – the appointments are full anyway. Google Ads pays off here in other places: when you open or relocate, when a chair sits empty and you need to fill it, when you want to build up higher-value services like color, highlights or extensions – or, and in this trade that is often the real bottleneck, when you're looking for staff. So I never build a campaign around 'more clicks', but around the one gap you actually want to fill.

What people search for reveals intent immediately. 'Hair salon near me', 'walk-in barber [city]' or 'barbershop [neighborhood]' are strongly local and often short-notice – the person wants a slot today or this week, the radius is tight, nobody drives across half the country for a haircut. Alongside those are the more valuable, considered searches: 'balayage [city]', 'hair extensions', 'wedding hairstyle', 'Olaplex' – here people compare, here specialization counts. Generic terms like 'hairdresser' on their own spread too wide for me; I prefer to work with the service, the neighborhood and the occasion in the search term, so the budget runs on purchase-ready, nearby intent rather than pure curiosity.

The conversion here is almost never an online purchase but the appointment – by phone, through a booking tool, or by message. That is exactly what makes tracking tricky: many salons book via external software, Instagram or WhatsApp, and then it's often impossible to cleanly measure which ad brought the appointment. I clarify that before launch. Call tracking belongs in the account from day one, because a large share of spontaneous bookings comes by phone; online bookings have to be recorded as a conversion. Anyone who only counts clicks optimizes blind and never sees which service actually brings clients into the chair.

The most honest stumbling block first: the cheap standard business often barely supports a paid ad, because the margin on a simple haircut is low – advertising usually only adds up via the high-value color, extensions and bridal-styling services, or via genuine new-client acquisition with repeat potential. Two more points from practice: negative keywords are mandatory, otherwise training and apprenticeship searches ('learn hairdressing', 'apprenticeship'), product purchases and 'hairdresser jobs' end up in the account and burn budget. And with cosmetic-medical borderline services – anti-aging, wrinkle treatment, permanent hair removal – caution is needed: promises of cure are off-limits in advertising law, so I stay factual here. In the end the decision is often made not in the ad but afterward, looking at reviews and before-and-after photos on the Google profile – ad, landing page and that profile have to convey the same picture.

Beauty is strongly occasion- and season-driven, which I plan for from the start: before wedding season in spring and summer, before Christmas, New Year's Eve and formal events, demand for color, updos and styling rises noticeably, and the weekly rhythm is clear – Friday and Saturday are the strong days. Spread the budget rigidly evenly and you give away visibility exactly when people are booking. On competition I stay honestly qualitative: locally the market is usually densely occupied, generic hairdresser terms are rather cheap but not very purchase-ready; specialized, higher-value services are more contested. I deliberately don't quote specific click prices – they vary strongly by city, service and season, and there is no guarantee. And the most unusual, often most effective lever in this trade: where skilled staff are scarce, targeted job ads in the region sometimes do more than any client campaign – because one additional good stylist fills more chairs than any click.

Common questions: Google Ads for Hair Salons & Beauty

You can advertise them, but only factually – promises of cure are off-limits. Phrases like 'permanently removes wrinkles' or 'eliminates acne' get rejected or are legally vulnerable, and near the line to medical treatment, therapeutic-products advertising law applies on top. So I keep the ads sober: the service, the process, a consultation appointment – instead of promises I'm not allowed to make. What ultimately convinces people are genuine reviews and honest before-and-after photos on the landing page, not the bold ad copy.

That's exactly the sore point in this trade, and I clarify it before launch. The conversion here is the appointment, not an online purchase – and when it comes through an Instagram DM or WhatsApp, it often can't be cleanly attributed to an ad. I get call tracking into the account from day one, because many spontaneous bookings come by phone; online bookings have to be recorded as a conversion, otherwise I'm optimizing blind. What's genuinely measurable depends on the tool – we look at that concretely beforehand instead of glossing over it.

Without negative keywords, a lot of wasted spend ends up in the account: 'learn hairdressing', 'hairdressing apprenticeship' and 'hairdresser jobs' come from trainees and applicants, not clients; on top of that, product purchases like 'buy Olaplex' and pure information searches. I exclude those consistently so the budget runs on purchase-ready, nearby appointment intent. Separating by value matters too: the cheap standard business often barely supports a paid ad – advertising usually only adds up via color, extensions, or bridal styling.
