Google Ads for Furniture Stores: The Click Brings a Visit, Not a Sale

Honest, practical knowledge about Google Ads in your industry – no advertising promises, just what typically works in practice.

Furniture is a trust purchase that hardly anyone completes blind in a browser – you want to sit on a sofa that costs a few thousand euros, and you want a kitchen properly planned. That's exactly why this industry behaves differently on Google than many expect: the ad almost never sells directly, it brings someone into the showroom or onto the phone. Set the campaign goal to the online cart instead of the store visit and you're measuring past the actual business – which is why I separate these cleanly from the start.

What customers search for splits into two worlds. Some research long and big – 'have a kitchen planned', 'made-to-measure sofa', 'solid wood table [city]' – and are often weeks from a decision, because they compare, measure up and align a budget. The others are fast and concretely local: 'buy mattress [city]', 'furniture store near me', 'box-spring bed available now'. The intent is almost always strongly local, because people want to drive over, touch it, and take it with them or have it delivered. Pure browsing terms like 'living room ideas' bring reach but rarely an appointment – the valuable searches carry an occasion, a product and a local reference.

The decisive conversion here is rarely the buy button, but the showroom visit, the planning appointment (especially in the kitchen studio), or the call about availability and delivery time. For the setup that means concretely: call tracking belongs in the account from day one, because a large share of valuable inquiries comes by phone, and linking to the Google Business Profile – opening hours, directions, location goals – often weighs more than the ad itself. Anyone who only counts clicks or online purchases never sees which terms actually bring people into the showroom. If you also sell shippable goods online, that's its own field with conversion tracking on order value and a well-maintained product feed for Shopping – which I run separately from the local showroom business.

The most honest stumbling block first: on generic terms like 'buy sofa' or 'cheap furniture', the big chains and online giants bid along with enormous budgets – trying to win there on price usually just burns money. A local store scores elsewhere: advice, custom-made pieces, fast regional delivery, assembly service, brands or styles the online mass market doesn't cover. On top of that comes traffic quality: the high cart value attracts a lot of comparison and browsing clicks, plus people who only want to grab measurements or prices. The long decision cycle can't be conjured away – but with tight targeting on concrete products, brands and local service searches I markedly reduce the spread and avoid the hopeless price war on the broad words.

Furniture is pronouncedly seasonal, and I plan for that from the outset. The turn of the year and spring bring the furnishing wave ('new year, new home'), summer is moving season – and a move almost always means new furniture, from the mattress to the fitted kitchen. Add the strong discount phases like end-of-season sales, Black Friday and clearance events, where demand and competition rise at the same time. Spread the budget stubbornly evenly across the year and you're too quiet exactly when people are buying. On cost I stay honestly qualitative: the broad furniture terms belong in the pricier segment because of the deep-pocketed competitors, while local and specialist service searches are usually cheaper and more rewarding. I deliberately don't quote specific click prices – they vary too much by region, range and timing, and I couldn't guarantee them anyway.

Common questions: Google Ads for Furniture Stores & Interior

Yes, but not through the online cart. I set up as conversions what actually counts for you: calls, route clicks to the showroom, and appointment or planning inquiries – with call tracking in the account from day one. Google can never see the final in-store purchase completely, I'll say that openly; that's why I work with these upstream signals and match them against the inquiries you notice in the showroom. That way you see which search terms actually bring people to you – instead of blindly counting clicks.

In this sector the high search volume pulls in a lot that doesn't buy: 'used furniture', 'buy second hand', 'build it yourself' and DIY plans, 'rent a sofa', plus apprenticeship and 'furniture store jobs'. I add such terms as negative keywords so your budget doesn't go to hobbyists, second-hand buyers or job seekers. I can't promise perfect filtering from day one, but I keep cleaning the list based on real search queries.

That depends on your delivery and assembly radius, not on a wish for reach. Hardly anyone buys bulky furniture 200 km away when delivery and assembly are expensive or impossible – there I'd only burn budget. I target the local core around your showroom and delivery area most tightly and most strongly. I only go cross-region where you genuinely deliver cleanly or have a specialization (like made-to-measure pieces or a rare brand) that pulls people to you even from a distance.
