Google Ads for Travel Agencies: against the portals you lose on price, not on advice

Honest, practical knowledge about Google Ads in your industry – no advertising promises, just what typically works in practice.

On Google, travel agencies face a competition that hardly any other local industry knows so harshly: on almost every generic travel term, the large online portals and comparison sites bid along with huge budgets. If you run a classic, advisory travel agency, you will rarely win that race on click price – and you don't need to. My whole logic when building campaigns revolves around filtering out exactly those searches where someone doesn't want the cheapest package deal, but a person who will put together a complex, expensive, or explanation-heavy trip for them.

What people search for splits into two very different worlds. One is price-driven and portal-dominated: 'package holiday Mallorca', 'cheap Turkey all-inclusive', 'last minute' – here you compete directly with Booking, comparison sites and the like, and that is usually expensive and thankless. The other world is advice-driven and local: 'travel agency [city]', 'cruise consultation', 'individual round trip Japan', 'have a honeymoon planned', 'organize a group trip'. These are the searches with real value for you – the person isn't looking for the lowest price, but for expertise and someone to talk to. That's why I deliberately build campaigns around occasion, type of travel and specialization, not around the bare destination the whole industry bids on.

For an advisory travel agency the decisive conversion is almost never a finished online booking, but the consultation request: the phone call, the contact form for an individual quote, or scheduling an appointment at the office. For the setup that means two things. First, call tracking is mandatory, because a large share of the high-value inquiries in particular comes by phone – if you only measure forms, you miss half the truth. Second, there are often weeks between the first click and a booked trip, and the value of a long-haul trip or cruise differs enormously from a short break. So that Google doesn't simply optimize for inquiry volume, the account needs feedback on which inquiries ended up becoming real, valuable bookings. Without that loop you optimize for many cheap leads instead of revenue.

The most honest stumbling block is the competition itself – but there's a second one that often costs money and gets overlooked: brand names. Bidding on well-known operators (TUI, AIDA and the like) or protected brand terms without being an official partner is legally sensitive in trademark terms, and the ad text has to make clear in what role you appear. The promise itself is also tricky: concrete prices or 'still available' in the ad go stale fast, because travel prices and capacities change daily – if the click then lands on a sold-out or pricier offer, the budget is burned and the trust is gone. That's why I prefer to work with advisory and specialization messaging rather than hard price claims I can't keep tomorrow.

Seasonality shapes hardly any industry as much, and here it's twofold: there is the classic booking season around the turn of the year and spring, when summer holidays get planned, and in parallel constant short-notice last-minute waves that hang on the weather, school holiday dates and bargains. If you stubbornly spread the budget evenly across the year, you're too quiet exactly when people book, and you burn money in the off-season. On cost I stay honestly qualitative: generic, portal-contested travel terms are among the more expensive in the search network, while specialized and local advisory searches are usually cheaper and more rewarding. I deliberately don't quote specific click prices – they vary strongly by destination, season and region, and there is no guarantee. My advice is always the same: don't try to beat the portals on their own field, but be visible where advice actually makes the difference.

Common questions: Google Ads for Travel Agencies & Tour Operators

Bidding on such brand names is tricky: if I'm not an official partner, it's open to trademark challenges, and the brand name can't simply appear in my ad text. Google may technically let it run, but the operator can file a complaint and it can get expensive and messy. So I prefer to build campaigns around type of travel, occasion and advice, rather than hitching onto someone else's brand that I can't defend legally.

That's exactly the wasted-spend question of this industry, and you can't make it vanish, but you can curb it sharply. I consistently separate out price- and portal-driven searches like 'cheap', 'last minute' or bare destination terms, and use negative keywords against self-bookers and job seekers. At the same time I build campaigns around advice-heavy searches – individual round trip, cruise consultation, have a honeymoon planned – so the people clicking are more likely to be the ones genuinely looking for someone to talk to.

Stay honest, or it burns trust: concrete prices or 'still available' in the ad go stale fast, because capacities and prices change daily – if the click lands on a sold-out or pricier offer, the budget and the trust are gone. So I prefer advisory messaging over hard price claims, and I pause or shift budget away from destinations currently under a travel warning. For me, steering by season and availability belongs in the account from day one.

That depends on what you sell. Classic 'travel agency [city]' advice and walk-in/phone contact are local – there the budget belongs in a tight radius around your office. Special trips you advise on by phone, email or video anyway (cruises or individual long-haul trips, say) I can deliberately run beyond the region, because there your specialization matters more than the local reference. The one essential: call tracking has to be running, or I'll miss exactly the phone inquiries that make up the bulk of your business.
