Google Ads for Online Shops: The Product Feed Decides More Than the Ad Copy

Honest, practical knowledge about Google Ads in your industry, no advertising promises, just what typically works in practice.

In e-commerce the real tension sits between revenue and profit. An account can display impressive sales figures and still lose money, because returns, shipping costs and cost of goods never appear in the Google Ads interface. On top of that, a shop rarely has a single assortment: worlds lie between a high-margin item and a loss leader, and one shared target flattens that difference completely. From my practice, retail projects therefore do not start in the ads account but with the question of what contribution margin remains per basket and which products should be advertised at all. Skipping that step means optimizing very precisely in the wrong direction.

Search intent can be separated far more cleanly in retail than in service industries. Queries combining a product name with a buying word, such as "buy [product]", "[brand] [model] spare part" or "[product] free shipping", sit close to the purchase, while "[product] review", "[product] comparison" and "[product] experiences" stand in the middle of deliberation. Searches for your own shop name follow their own rules: those clicks are cheap and convert strongly, but many would have happened without an ad, which is why I evaluate them separately instead of mixing them into new customer acquisition. Repair instructions, manuals, second-hand searches and part numbers for products you do not carry belong on the negative list.

Measurement in retail stands or falls with the order value. Conversions without a value are practically useless in e-commerce, because only transmitted revenue enables value-based bidding, and anyone who transmits margin instead of revenue steers the account towards where money is actually earned. The quality of the product feed matters just as much: title, product category, availability, price and images determine which queries an item can even appear for in shopping ads, and a well-kept feed often outperforms any bid adjustment. Returns have to be fed back, otherwise the account considers assortments successful that end up half back in the warehouse.

The biggest mistake is judging an entire account by a single metric. A high return on ad spend appears quickly when many existing customers buy via the shop name while not a single new customer arrives, and a low figure can be perfectly healthy in an assortment with a high repurchase rate. The second mistake is a feed that does not mirror stock in real time: advertising sold-out items burns budget and disappoints customers twice over. The third mistake is neglecting the product page itself, because load time, shipping costs and delivery time decide the purchase after the click, and no campaign repairs a weak product page.

Seasonality is harsher in retail than almost anywhere else. The fourth quarter brings the highest revenue with promotional weeks in November and the Christmas business, while click prices rise noticeably because every competitor bids at the same time and many of them temporarily give up margin. January follows with the wave of returns that retroactively changes the picture of December, and summer is the quietest period in many assortments. Honestly framed on competition: large marketplaces and price comparison portals bid on nearly every product term and operate with cost structures a single shop does not have. The way forward therefore rarely runs through price, but through assortment depth, availability, advice and repeat purchase.
