What is Performance Max?
Performance Max (PMax) has been Google's central AI-based campaign type since 2022. It uses machine learning to automatically run your ads across the entire Google network: Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, and Discover.
Advantages
- Maximum reach: One campaign type for all Google channels
- AI optimization: Google learns which combinations work best
- New audiences: PMax finds users you wouldn't reach with manual campaigns
Disadvantages
The biggest drawback: less transparency and control. You can't see exactly which search terms triggered clicks and can't manage individual channels separately.
Best Practices
Conversion tracking must be perfect: PMax optimizes for conversions. Faulty tracking means Google optimizes in the wrong direction.
Pro Tip: Use PMax complementary to Search campaigns, not as a replacement.
