What ChatGPT Ads are

Advertising where people prepare their decision

ChatGPT Ads are labelled ad cards below the answer. They show your name, your logo, a headline, text, an image and the link to your page. The answer itself stays untouched, OpenAI states that explicitly.

01

Context instead of keywords

Instead of search terms you provide Context Hints: short descriptions of when your offer helps. OpenAI matches them against the content of the running conversation.

02

A relevance-weighted auction

As with Google, the bid alone does not decide. OpenAI runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction, so strong ads and matching landing pages pay off directly.

03

No personalisation in Europe

In the EEA and Switzerland OpenAI uses no chat history and no stored memories at launch. What counts is the current topic, approximate location, device, time of day and language. Custom Audiences are not available here yet, which makes hints and creatives all the more important.

Platform status

ChatGPT Ads in Germany and Europe: where things stand in October 2026

OpenAI reshapes the platform almost every week. This is what is officially documented, each with a link to the source, so you do not have to plan on hearsay.

  • Self-service in DACH and Poland

    Available

    DE · AT · CH · PL

Businesses from these countries book ChatGPT Ads themselves in the Ads Manager. What counts is where the company that advertises and receives the invoice is based. In total OpenAI currently lists 63 countries as available.

  • Minimum daily budget

    Per currency

    €15 · PLN 65 · CHF 20

The daily budget is an average over seven days. On single days OpenAI may spend up to twice the amount, over the week never more than seven times.

  • Billing

    After delivery

    CPM · CPC · oCPC · oCPM

You pay per 1,000 impressions or per click, even when the campaign optimises for conversions. OpenAI never bills per conversion. Self-service accounts pay by card, charged when a payment threshold is reached and at the latest at the end of the month.

  • New accounts

    Home country first

Some new self-service accounts can only advertise in their own country at first. Other countries open up once identity verification is approved and enough budget has run in the home country. If you want to reach Austria or Poland from a German account, plan for that.

  • Sponsored Agents

    Alpha test, US only

After clicking an ad, users chat with an AI representative of the business, labelled and kept separate from ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI is testing this with selected advertisers in the US and is not accepting early access requests at the moment.

The Ads Manager suggests copy and images based on your landing page and campaign objective. If you opt in, headlines and descriptions are adapted to the conversation and translated into the user's language. I review such suggestions before launch like any other ad copy.

Eligibility

Who ChatGPT Ads can work for right now, and who not

Cleared first
  • Local services
  • Home and lifestyle
  • Travel and experiences
  • Digital products and education

Online shops: product feed campaigns are documented, the category approval depends on your assortment (home and lifestyle first).

Prohibited outside the US
  • Financial services
  • Health and medicine
  • Legal services

The ban applies to companies based outside the US and to any delivery outside the US, including by US companies. Case-by-case approvals exist only in the US.

Not allowed at the moment
  • Dating and adult
  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Gambling
  • Political advertising
  • Counterfeits

In the first call I check whether your offer is eligible, before you spend a single euro.

Based on OpenAI ad policies, as of 10 September 2026

My assessment

Eligible does not mean worth it

Whether advertising in ChatGPT pays off for you depends less on your industry than on how your customers decide. This is how I sort it in the first call.

More likely worth it if

  • your customers compare and ask questions before they buy, for example with software, courses, travel or furnishings. That is exactly the phase OpenAI wants to reach with ads.
  • your landing page already answers the typical questions, because OpenAI takes it into account in the auction.
  • you can carry at least €15 a day for several weeks without cutting your Google Ads budget for it.
  • a pixel or the Conversions API is feasible on your site, so that enquiries count in the end, not just clicks.

Probably not yet if

  • you offer financial, health or legal services. Outside the US OpenAI currently does not allow these categories.
  • your Google Ads account is not yet reliably profitable. Then I start where people are already searching.
  • you need predictable enquiries within a few weeks. ChatGPT Ads are a beta, and OpenAI itself does not publish benchmarks yet.

Process

How you usually go live in ChatGPT within 7 days.

  1. Day 1

    Intro call, eligibility, goal

I clarify with you whether your offer is eligible under the OpenAI ad policies, what the campaign is meant to achieve and which conversion event counts in the end. If your industry is excluded, such as finance, health or legal, you hear it here, not after the first budget.

  2. Day 2 to 3

    Account, billing, tracking

Ads Manager account and billing profile, OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API, event testing. Plus clearing the OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot crawlers on your site, without which OpenAI cannot assess your landing page.

  3. Day 4 to 5

    Context Hints, ad groups, creatives

The Context Hint map comes out of the questions your customers actually ask. Then ad groups, several headline and text variants, images and a landing page check, so ad and destination speak the same language.

  4. Day 6

    Your review and sign-off

You see every ad before launch, and we set budget and bids together. Change requests come in now, not later during the run.

  5. Day 7

    Launch and first read-out

The campaigns go live. The first evaluation follows after 7 days of runtime, because OpenAI steers the daily budget as a weekly average and single days say little.

Why me

Why a Google Ads specialist for ChatGPT Ads.

01

Familiar logic: the bid alone doesn't decide

If you understand the Google auction, you understand OpenAI's too. I have run Google Ads accounts for years. At Google, Ad Rank comes from your bid, ad and landing-page quality, Ad Rank thresholds, auction competitiveness, the search context and the expected impact of assets. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Ads uses a relevance-weighted auction. In both cases the highest bid does not simply win.

02

Tracking first

Pixel, Conversions API, consent. Without clean measurement no platform can optimise. That is exactly my core work from Google Ads, and it transfers one to one.

03

Honest about a beta

OpenAI itself publishes no benchmarks yet. So I do not promise numbers, I run a test with clear stop and scale criteria, defined before the first budget goes out.

04

Fixed prices, no cut of your budget

You pay for work, not for your own media budget. No small print, no commission, no markup on the invoice from OpenAI.

Pricing

Fixed prices, the same as Google Ads.

What you will not get

What I do not do.

ChatGPT Ads is a beta. Here is what is being promised in this market right now, and what I do instead:

No promised numbers

OpenAI states itself that it has no performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types. Anyone guaranteeing you CTR, CPC or conversion rates for ChatGPT Ads today made them up.

No cut of your budget

You pay a fixed price for work. Your media budget goes straight to OpenAI, I do not earn more when you spend more.

No OpenAI partner claim

There is no partner programme I belong to, and I do not pretend otherwise. I bring transferable experience from the Google Ads auction and from tracking.

No personalisation tricks

In the EEA and Switzerland OpenAI currently serves no personalised ads and supports no Custom Audiences there. Anyone selling you remarketing inside ChatGPT is selling something that does not exist here.

FAQ

Common questions about ChatGPT Ads.

How it differs

What works differently in ChatGPT Ads than in Google Ads

Both channels are auctions, and still I plan them differently. These are the differences that matter most at the start.

Trigger
Google AdsA search query, steered through keywords and the search terms report.
ChatGPT AdsThe conversation context, steered through context hints. There are no exact match keywords.
Audiences in Europe
Google AdsCustomer lists and remarketing are possible with consent.
ChatGPT AdsNo personalised ads in the EEA and Switzerland. Custom audiences are not supported for these countries.
Billing
Google AdsMostly per click, depending on the campaign type also per 1,000 impressions.
ChatGPT AdsPer 1,000 impressions or per click. Never per conversion, even with a conversion goal.
Measurement
Google AdsGoogle tag, enhanced conversions and Consent Mode.
ChatGPT AdsOpenAI pixel and Conversions API. UTM parameters persist on the click.
Reporting
Google AdsEstablished reports with search terms and auction data.
ChatGPT AdsImpressions and clicks about every 15 minutes, spend with a 7 to 8 hour delay.
Track record
Google AdsFrom my practice: comparison values from many accounts and years.
ChatGPT AdsBeta. OpenAI does not yet publish benchmarks across industries or campaign types.

My approach: Google Ads stays the base for demand that already exists. I test ChatGPT Ads alongside it with its own budget and criteria agreed in advance for when we scale up or stop.

How they fit together

ChatGPT Ads complements Google Ads, it does not replace it

Both channels use the same landing pages, the same conversion event and the same question: what can a click carry? Running both from one place shows you which channel brings which customers.
