Ad Rank
Ad Rank determines where your ad appears in Google search results. It's calculated from your bid, Quality Score, and expected impact of extensions.
What is Ad Rank?
Ad Rank is Google's internal scoring system, recalculated for every search query. It decides whether and where your ad appears. The formula: Ad Rank = Bid × Quality Score × expected impact of extensions.
Why Ad Rank Matters
A higher Ad Rank means a better position in search results. Positions 1-3 receive the majority of clicks. From position 4 onward, CTR drops drastically. Ad Rank also determines whether your ad is shown at all — Google has a minimum Ad Rank threshold.
How to Improve Your Ad Rank
- Increase Quality Score: The most effective lever — improves rank without higher costs
- Raise your bid: Direct method, but costs more budget
- Use ad extensions: Sitelinks, callouts, and snippets increase the expected extension effect
Pro Tip: Instead of blindly increasing bids, invest in better ad copy and landing pages. A Quality Score of 8 at a €2 bid beats a Quality Score of 4 at a €3 bid.
