What is Server-Side Tagging?

Server-side tagging (sGTM) is a Google Tag Manager architecture where a server container sits between your website and third parties like Google Ads or Google Analytics. The browser only sends data to your own subdomain (e.g. tracking.yourdomain.com) — from there, the server container distributes it to the respective platforms.

How Does Server-Side Tagging Work?

Instead of many individual tags in the browser, only one lightweight script runs on the website. The actual processing happens on the server:

• Better data quality: Requests to your own subdomain are blocked less often by ad blockers and browser tracking protection
• More control: You decide server-side which data goes to which platform — and can truncate IP addresses, for example
• Faster website: Less JavaScript in the browser improves load time

Who Is It For?

Server-side tagging incurs ongoing costs for the server container plus setup and maintenance effort. It pays off mainly with significant ad budgets, where lost conversion data costs more than operating the server.

Pro Tip: First get your classic tracking including Consent Mode v2 in order. Server-side tagging amplifies a clean foundation — it doesn't fix a broken setup. Important: consent requirements also apply server-side.
