ChatGPT Ads for Trade Businesses
When something breaks at home, people now often describe the problem to a chat first: what they see, what they hear, what it might cost. These conversations are about getting oriented and about deciding whether to fix it yourself or call someone. That is exactly where your ad sits, below the answer, when your trade matches the topic.
Local services are on the list of verticals OpenAI cleared first in its ad policies (as of 31 August 2026), so trade businesses land in the green zone right away.
Conversation starters
How people ask in ChatGPT
Not search terms, conversations. This is roughly how the questions sound next to whose answer your ad should appear.
Water is dripping under our sink, is that a case for an emergency callout?
Roughly what does it cost to have an old bathroom completely redone?
I need someone to fit a new door soon, what should I look out for?
Which trades do I need for a loft conversion and in what order?
How do I find a reliable local company that actually calls back?
Context hints
Context hints that match
Context hints describe the situation in which your offer helps. OpenAI matches them against the running conversation, not against a keyword.
Water damage in a rented flat, residents looking for a local company with an emergency callout service
Owners planning to renovate a bathroom from the eighties who want a cost estimate first
Families with an older house who need to coordinate several trades and want one contact person
People comparing quotes who want to know what belongs in a serious cost estimate
Property managers with recurring small repairs looking for one steady partner nearby
Examples following the OpenAI best practice, not exact match keywords.
Setup
What the campaign starts with
Campaign objective
Start with the clicks objective (CPC) and a fixed daily budget until measurement delivers signal. Once lead_created fires regularly, meaning a form submission or callback request, create a new campaign with the conversions objective (oCPC) on exactly that event.
Landing page
The ad must not point at your homepage but at the page for the specific service, with your service area, a tap-to-call number and a short form. Your server has to let OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot through, otherwise OpenAI cannot read the landing page.
From my practice
Three mistakes that tend to cost money
Emergency work and planned projects in one ad group. From experience in auction channels, both need their own context hints and their own landing page, otherwise the ad fits neither conversation.
A service area that is far too wide. From my practice with auction channels, transferred to ChatGPT Ads: requests that mean a two hour drive cost budget and rarely turn into a job.
No defined callback process. A lead from a conversation is, in my experience, just as impatient as one from search, and whoever calls back the next day is paying for the competition.

Frequently asked questions
Are ChatGPT Ads worth it for a single trade business?
Your trade falls under local services and therefore into one of the categories cleared first. OpenAI itself states it has no performance benchmarks across industries yet, so I treat the channel as a test next to a running Google base, with a fixed test budget and stop criteria written down before launch.
Can I bid on search terms with a city name like in Google Ads?
No. ChatGPT Ads has no exact-match keywords. At ad group level you provide context hints, meaning descriptions of conversations, topics and needs. OpenAI explicitly states that context hints are no guarantee of appearing in specific conversations.
Will this reach people in my service area at all?
You select target countries at campaign level. For the EEA, OpenAI names approximate location among the signals, and there is no personalization from past chats at launch. So you carry the regional angle actively in your context hints, ad copy and landing page.
What has to be in place before the first ad runs?
A landing page for the specific service, the OpenAI pixel or the conversions API with a standard event such as lead_created, UTM parameters on every destination and crawler access for OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot. Without measurement, a test in a channel without benchmarks is pure gut feeling.
