Context Hints

In short

Context Hints are descriptions at ad group level in ChatGPT Ads. They tell OpenAI which conversations, topics and needs an ad fits, but they are not exact match keywords.

What are Context Hints?

Context Hints are descriptions you store at ad group level in ChatGPT Ads. They record which conversations, topics and needs your ad fits. OpenAI explicitly points out that they are not exact match keywords and that they do not guarantee an appearance in any specific conversation.

How Context Hints feed ad selection

OpenAI selects ads by expected relevance. That includes the context and intent of the ongoing conversation, the landing page, headline and text of the ad, your targeting choices and the Context Hints. So they are one signal among several, not a switch that forces delivery.

OpenAI recommends being specific. Instead of "running shoes" the Help Center gives "cushioned everyday running shoes for beginners training for their first 5K" as an example. The hint describes a situation, not just a product.

Practical notes

  • One occasion per ad group: separate ad groups with their own hints and their own ads stay readable, one catch all group does not.
  • Think of the landing page: the hint describes the situation, the destination page has to deliver the matching answer.
  • Test the wording: Search Engine Land reported in August 2026 from a US test by John Horn that keyword style hints delivered more impressions and a higher click through rate at a lower click price than fully written out sentences. That is a single observation, not a benchmark.

From my practice: I treat Context Hints like a description of demand, not like a keyword list. If your offers are already sorted by search intent, you can carry that structure over: one ad group per intent, one clearly described occasion per ad group.

How they differ from keywords in Google Ads

In Google Ads you book keywords and use match types to control how far matching may reach. Context Hints work differently: they give OpenAI clues about conversations rather than matches for search queries. Treating them like an exact match list means expecting a level of control the platform does not promise. The other way round: the more precise the occasion you describe, the better the basis for selection in the auction.
