oCPC (conversion-optimized CPC)
oCPC is the conversion-optimized campaign objective in ChatGPT Ads. You still pay for valid clicks, but delivery is optimized towards one conversion event chosen upfront.
What is oCPC?
oCPC stands for optimized cost per click and is the third campaign objective in ChatGPT Ads next to CPM and CPC. You pay per valid click just like in a classic click campaign, but the campaign is delivered with an eye on a conversion event you select when creating it.
How oCPC works
At ad group level you set a bid cap, meaning the maximum bid per conversion. Working measurement is a prerequisite: OpenAI requires the pixel, the Conversions API or both, plus at least one standard event such as lead_created, appointment_scheduled or order_created. Bidding runs on the automatic "maximize results" strategy by default, with a manual maximum bid available as an alternative. OpenAI explicitly gives no CPA or ROAS guarantee.
Two restrictions are worth knowing upfront: objective and conversion event cannot be changed once the campaign is created, and existing CPM or CPC campaigns cannot be switched to oCPC afterwards.
Practical notes
- Pick the event deliberately: an event that rarely fires gives the optimization little to learn from. An event that sits too early optimizes for movement instead of enquiries.
- Measure twice: pixel and Conversions API can be combined, with deduplication running on the same event_id.
- Check the click reference: OpenAI appends the oppref parameter to your destination URL and the pixel stores it as a first party cookie. If the parameter gets lost on the way, the attribution is missing.
From my practice: because objective and event cannot be changed later, this decision belongs before the campaign starts and not into the first optimization round. So I first check in a test run whether the intended event arrives cleanly, and only then go live.
How it differs from Smart Bidding in Google Ads
In Google Ads conversion optimization is a bidding strategy: Smart Bidding with target CPA or target ROAS can be switched inside a running campaign. In ChatGPT Ads oCPC is a campaign objective that is fixed at creation instead. Billing differs from pure conversion billing too: the click price stays the billing unit while the bid refers to the conversion. What stays the same in both systems is the basic condition: without reliable conversion tracking the algorithm optimizes on noise.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Valid clicks are what gets billed. The bid refers to the conversion, so the bid cap is the maximum bid per conversion and not the price you pay per click.
