ChatGPT Ads vs. Google Ads: What Really Sets Them Apart
ChatGPT Ads reached Europe in August 2026: reach, targeting, auction, measurement and policies honestly compared with Google Ads.
Google Ads stays the foundation: that is where people search actively, and where you steer with keywords, bids and conversion data. ChatGPT Ads is an addition, not a replacement. A test is worth it when your offer falls into one of the approved categories, your landing page holds up and your conversion tracking is clean. Then a separate small test budget runs alongside the Google base, with stop criteria defined upfront instead of hope.

Detailed Analysis
ChatGPT Ads vs. Google Ads: The Difference in Practice
Ads have been running inside ChatGPT in Europe since August 2026, and the first question is almost always the same: is this the replacement for Google Ads? The short answer is no. The longer one: both systems sell attention through an auction, but they collect that attention at completely different moments. Google Ads answers a search query, ChatGPT Ads sits at the end of a conversation. What that means for your budget is below.
Where ChatGPT Ads stands today
The timeline is short, which is exactly why it helps to put things in order:
- 9 February 2026: Test launch in the US, first as a pilot, then with self-serve onboarding.
- 18 August 2026: OpenAI announces the rollout to 31 European markets, among them Germany and Austria.
- 24 August 2026: First delivery in Germany, reported by HORIZONT and OnlineMarketing.de.
- 31 August 2026: Self-service through the Ads Manager in all 31 European markets. OpenAI lists the Ads Manager as available for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
OpenAI itself calls the platform a beta in an early scaling phase and states in its help center that it does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types. Anyone quoting you industry numbers for ChatGPT Ads today made them up. Digiday reported an annualized run rate of one billion US dollars on 31 August 2026. That says something about advertiser demand, and nothing about your channel contribution.
The four differences that carry your decision
1. Who sees the ads at all
Inside ChatGPT, only Free and Go users see ads. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu stay ad-free, and accounts identified as under 18 receive no ads. Your reach is therefore a slice of the ChatGPT user base, not full access. Google Ads, by contrast, serves everyone in Search with no subscription limit. The ad itself appears below the answer, clearly labelled as sponsored and visually separated. According to OpenAI it does not influence the answer.
2. How you address demand
Google Ads works with keywords and match types. Through search terms and negatives you decide fairly precisely which queries you bid on. ChatGPT Ads has no exact-match keywords. At ad group level you provide context hints, meaning descriptions of conversations, topics and needs. OpenAI explicitly recommends writing "cushioned everyday running shoes for beginners training for their first 5K" instead of "running shoes", and makes clear that context hints are no guarantee of appearing in specific conversations. You describe a situation instead of booking a query.
3. How the auction decides
Google Ads derives ad rank from your bid and quality, which is why a better ad and landing page experience pushes the click price down. ChatGPT Ads, according to OpenAI, uses a relevance-weighted second-price auction. Selection follows expected relevance and expected outcome, and the inputs are the context and intent of the ongoing conversation, landing page, headline, text, context hints and targeting. The principle is familiar: relevance is not a bonus, it is a price factor.
4. What personalization is missing in Europe
At launch, ads in the EEA and Switzerland are not personalized. No past chats, no saved memories. The signals OpenAI names, quoted by Trending Topics, are the topic of the current conversation, approximate location, device type, time of day and language. Custom audiences are not supported for campaigns targeting the EEA or Switzerland. Everything you steer in Google Ads through remarketing and audience lists is unavailable here for now. If you optimize with existing-customer exclusions or cart abandoners, that lever is exactly what you lose.
What stays the same
The uncomfortable part for anyone hoping a new channel means a fresh start: the underlying maths does not change.
- The landing page decides: A click from ChatGPT lands on the same page your Google Ads clicks have to convert on. If it is slow, unclear or a poor match for the promise, you burn money in both channels.
- One cleanly defined conversion event: Without an event that reflects real business value, you optimize for clicks. In ChatGPT that counts double, because conversion-optimized campaigns (oCPC) require the pixel or conversions API plus a standard event.
- Click price logic: Your bid is a ceiling, not a price. What you end up paying is decided in the auction. Which click price your offer can actually carry is something you can work through for the Google side in the click price calculator, and the reasoning transfers one to one.
- Budget discipline: OpenAI also treats the daily budget as an average across seven days, so individual days may run higher. Judging after two days means judging too early.
Who ChatGPT Ads makes sense for right now
OpenAI's policies answer this question before any performance argument. Simplified as a traffic light:
- Green: Lifestyle and household, local services, travel and experiences, digital products and education. These are the verticals OpenAI is starting with.
- Amber: Finance, health and legal only run after manual individual approval. That is not plannable, so build in lead time.
- Red: Adult and dating, alcohol and tobacco, gambling, political advertising and counterfeits are not allowed. On top of that, OpenAI suppresses ads in sensitive conversation contexts as a matter of principle, for instance around mental health.
If your offer stays in the green zone, the second question is how mature your setup is. Without reliable conversion tracking, a test in a channel without benchmarks is pure gut feeling.
How I approach it
I treat ChatGPT Ads as a test channel alongside a running Google base, not as a reallocation:
- The Google budget stays untouched. The test gets its own small budget. What works gets expanded, not the other way round.
- Stop criteria before the start. Test budget, time window and the result that justifies the test are written down beforehand. If no qualified conversion shows up in tracking after that window, it stops instead of getting topped up.
- Measurement first. OpenAI pixel and, where useful, the conversions API with the same event_id for deduplication, one standard event per goal, UTM parameters on all destinations. And the landing page must not block OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot, otherwise the ad loses its basis.
- Setup within seven days of the order and account access, so the test fits into a quarter instead of a project year.
What the ongoing management looks like is on the ChatGPT Ads page. If you want to know beforehand whether your offer falls into the approved categories and your tracking holds up, the ChatGPT Ads check walks through exactly those points.
