Click-Through Rate (CTR)
Click-Through Rate (CTR) indicates how often users click your ad after seeing it. It is calculated as: Clicks ÷ Impressions × 100.
What is Click-Through Rate (CTR)?
Click-Through Rate (CTR) is one of the most important metrics in Google Ads. It shows the ratio between users who see your ad (impressions) and those who actually click on it. A CTR of 5% means: out of 100 people who see your ad, 5 click on it.
Why CTR Matters
CTR is a direct indicator of how relevant your ad is to your target audience. Google uses it as one of three main factors for Quality Score. A higher CTR leads to:
- Better Quality Scores resulting in lower cost per click
- Higher ad positions at the same bid
- More website visitors without additional cost
What is a Good CTR?
Average CTR varies significantly by industry and network. In the Search Network, the average is around 3-5%. In the Display Network, a CTR of 0.5-1% is already good. Brand keywords often achieve 10-30% CTR.
How to Improve Your CTR
1. Relevant ad copy: Include the main keyword in your ad headline. Users click more often when they see their search term in the ad.
2. Strong calls-to-action: "Get your free consultation now" works better than "Learn more."
3. Use ad extensions: Sitelinks, callouts, and snippets enlarge your ad and provide more click opportunities.
4. Negative keywords: Exclude irrelevant search terms so your ad only appears for relevant searches.
Pro Tip: Test at least 3 different ad variations per ad group. Google will automatically show the best-performing variant more often.
